This is the famous Bradford, UK Yes show that supposedly is the earliest known recording that contains an interesting version of South Side Of The Sky. But what this show is also famous for is that it is probably the worst Yes recording ever! Hence, I expect that only completists will download this for their collection. I got a tape of this back around 1980 from a UK tape trader. He was able to supply me with an abundance of then rare Yes and Wakeman shows from Europe. I finally decided to dig this gem out and give it a listen after about 25 years. It is indeed horrible and so I set to work trying to clean it up in any way I could. it was plagued with distortion and horribly muffled. I spent a few hours monkeying around and finally got it half-way listenable, but its still bad. Surprisingly, it sounds better at low volume.

Forgotten Yesterdays website lists this as a 60 minute recording. I've never seen one longer than this one here which is 48 minutes.

If anyone has a better version of this then please seed it!

I've wanted to get this recording out to the trading community for ages as I beleive this
is the only existing tape of this show - but I didn't have a decent tape deck to do the
transfer until recently.

It's from my own master tapes and has never been previously circulated.
As you would expect it's not perfect but the sound is not too bad given the age of the tape and
the shitty equipment that was available to my 15 yr old self! Quite a few tape cuts
as I used C60s for some reason rather than C90s.
Having said that, the show is very listenable and I've revisited it many times over the years.

This was my second ever concert and my first at Green's Playhouse - soon to be re-launched
as the legendary Glasgow Apollo.

I also recorded a couple of tracks by the opening act on the tour Johnathan Swift and these are incuded here - It's amazing to hear how well he went down with the Glasgow audience who are not noted for their tolerance of support acts. Did some research and discovered that he passed away a couple of years ago. You can read an obituary here if you're interested.

This is my third attempt to produce a good-quality version of the Wolverhampton show, and my most successful. I obtained a higher-quality, lower-generation stereo copy of the show from Steve "Relayerman" Wehner. Most of the stereo content of the show is preserved here, but on a few tracks - Perpetual Change and Yours Is No Disgrace, to be exact - the left channel was so damaged and muddy that I went with the right channel and Sound Forge's Acoustic Mirror audio processor, to give a stereo feel that works with the rest of the recording.

The copy of the recording is the first I have found with the tracks in what I believe is the correct order. Most have the Wakeman solo and Long Distance Runaround/The Fish transposed. This was probably done by a dubious bootlegger to make the recording fit a 90-minute cassette better than the original order; as a result, this has become the defacto sequence of the set. Note the on-stage bantering and guitar riff played by Howe which leads directly into Anderson's introduction of Perpetual Change. This is all one sequence in the set between the two pieces. I discovered this mis-ordering when working on the 30th anniversary remaster of this show in late 2001, and set the tracks in the correct order on that release. The "7 From 71" version of the show was taken from another cassette and was missing some of the banter between the boys, and I did not change the sequence on that version.

There is no way to know how many more remasters there will be of this important and complete show, or whether this one will be my last attempt, but hopefully each will be better than the last.

Remastering notes:
The recording had numerous loud passages where the taper had not adjusted for changes in the music volume. This caused distortion on the master tape which still exists in the remaster. The taper tended to overcompensate for the high levels by turning the record level down too far, then back up to a reasonable level. These abrupt changes have been smoothed out in this remaster. Additionally, the tape ran fast and the pitch was therefore too high. This has been corrected, too, along with hiss and click reduction. Equalization was applied to remove hum and some annoying frequencies which resonated in the concert hall, and to give a more natural overall sound.

* Apparently the band's organ either broke down or did not arrived at the concert hall. Rather than stop the show for twenty minutes and wait for the instrument to arrive, Jon called for Long Distance Runaround and The Fish instead of Heart of the Sunrise - but not before he had already given his lengthy introduction to the latter.

** Jon again introduces Heart of the Sunrise, determined to play this important song from the "new album" (Fragile) in spite of the still-missing organ. Who are those additional voices? And is that a dog barking while the band tunes up? Wakeman fills with piano where we usually hear the organ in the introduction to Heart of the Sunrise.

*** The tape runs out during the middle section of Perpetual Change. The recording picks up again during the wrap-up of the song. Apparently the entire drum solo was missed by the taper. Since some type of edit would be required to put the two pieces of the song together without the middle section, I cross-faded the two fragments in a style similar to the studio version of the song, in which the two Yes bands play against each other on opposite stereo channels.

Recorded using CoolEdit Pro 2.1 on an Asus NV76VZ laptop, running Windows 8.1 64bit, via external Creative Soundblaster X-Fi HD soundcard, from Akai AP-306c turntable with standard MM cartridge, with anti-static brush and 786 gram record weight, good quality cables.

Clicks were repaired to a level that would not compromise the recording.

ClickRepair setting: CR-25, DC-2, Reverse, x2 method.
Louder clicks were repaired (very, very carefully) using Cool Edit Pro 2.1.

This version was editted using Cool Edit Pro 2.1 to remove unwanted silences, to paste side one and side two together to create a better flow, and to separate into individual tracks.
Nothing else was done, no remastering, no channel fixing, no source mixing, nothing.

Keep in mind that this is a vinyl recording, and that there will always be vinyl artefacts to be heard.

So here it is, warts and all (though some warts were treated):

Yes - Mega-rare restored LP "The White Yes Album" Amsterdam 1972-01-21 speed corrected and rejoined - an incredible experience

It is my contention that even if you own this LP... you've never really heard it before.

This Dutch album on Offshore Records is the definitive recording of this show. Forget the CD reissue - I have it, it stinks. Upon listening to this record, I found it to be running noticeably slow. It was pitched by ear on the turntable, resulting in an improvement in the sound quality.

This is one of the best Yes performances around, don't miss it!

Notes:

'THE WHITE YES ALBUM'
This is the first white YES album, recorded live at the famous Amsterdam concert-building, where so many great artists performed. Some people call it: 'The Amsterdam Fillmore' and that is a good name for it. As said before, every artist played at least once in his life in Amsterdam, and this time YES played there already for the second time within a few months! In 2 days both concerts in Amsterdam and Rotterdam were completely sold out and even some wellknown press-authority's could not get tickets, now that says some-thing doesn't it? It says that YES is now one of the most popular groups of the seventies not only in England and Holland, but also in the States and all over the world. YES is a revolution in music today, and that's a fact. Maybe Jon Anderson, song-writer and singer supreme, is responsible for that, but all YES members are brilliant on their instruments. Beside that, you'll find all the best parts of the concert, such as 'I've seen all good people', 'Hearts of the sunrise' and the Anderson composition 'Long Distance' and the wonderful 'Yours is no disgrace'.

Enjoy!

Wellos.

This recording is a bit strange in that the drums, cymbals, and keyboards are clear as a bell (listen to the sample) whereas the vocals are a bit muffled. Its as if the recorder were on stage or behind the stage possibly.

Another good audience recording from the Bruford years, considering the fact that it's 1972.
It almost sounds like the auditorium is half empty, which I doubt.
Sound sample is in the comments section as usual.
This is taken from the Japanese boot 'Fragile At Winterland' on the Blue Cafe label.
The 61 minute/29 minute split between disc is theirs, not mine.
I've checked the tracker and cannot find this show, so I hope to avoid another 'Yale Bowl' fiasco!

Ok Yes heads, here is a brand new show from the taper's master tape! This is pretty much an uncirculated Fragile show from the US winter/spring tour. The taper, Steve Quinn, was kind enough to offer his recording for distribution and apparently I was an early responder so I was sent the raw show on CD. I made a few tweaks such as a minor speed correction, added a little bottom-end, and removed 2-second track gaps & retracked. Here are the taper's comments on the show and lineage:

"You're the first to get a copy. I'm really not terribly concerned about it becoming widely available. As for the method of transfer, I used an Ion USB turntable with an input for cassette decks. As for the original recording, it was a little Sony portable deck with built in mike. We were seated pretty high up but facing the stage straight on. That's all I remember. The thing has been gathering dust for a lot of years till I got this turntable and decided to transfer it. I made copies of it for friends decades ago but doubt if any of those are in circulation....

The order on the tape is the order on the disc. It was a short set as they weren't top-billed at that show. The set list looks similar to that at San Bernardino but with YIND as an encore (I guess). I'm almost certain that nothing was played between Perpetual Change (when the tape ran out) and Your Move when I got it flipped over. The set went like this:
Intro: Firebird
Roundabout
Heart of the Sunrise
Perpetual Change (incomplete)
Your Move (lost a cappella intro)
Yours Is No Disgrace

The only possible deviation would be between Perpetual Change and Your Move. I'm pretty certain we would have remembered if Howe had played a solo in there. I would have been kicking myself all these years for missing it.
Pretty sure this is the whole set."

Handle With Care is the latest Yes release on the Sirene label and contains two very good and short documents from the Fragile tour. The first disc is the complete forty-eight minute set from March 17th, 1972 at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino. Yes were opening for Black Sabbath and Wild Turkey and played a very short set. The tape comes from the same one who produced the Deep Purple tape from January at this same venue and the March 22nd Long Beach Emerson Lake & Palmer tape (five days after this show).

Black Sabbath’s set was also taped and released on the cdr label Power Gate as on San Bernardino. Blue Cafe recently produced this on cdr as California Sunrise but Sirene is the first silver release of this important new tape. Like the others from this taper the sound quality is slightly distant but clear and powerful and he adds his comments to the action on stage like when Squire is playing the lead at the beginning of “Heart Of The Sunrise” saying “this is going to be heavy!”

Since Yes were the opening act for many of these dates we get truncated yet intense sets. They only had forty-five minutes on stage and had to drop “Mood For A Day”, “Long Distance Runaround”, “The Fish”, “Yours Is No Disgrace” and Rick Wakeman’s solo, all staples of their act on the Fragile tour. There is a small cut in the tape during “Firebird suite” but contains all of Yes’ music. After “Roundabout” Anderson says, “I hope you’re enjoying yourselves. We’re going to do a song from the Fragile album.

A song about big cities like L.A., places like that.” Steve Howe interrupts Anderson with cryptic remarks by saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, these humanoids you see are refugees from Dr. Who”. After the song Anderson introduces Howe but there is trouble with the microphone on his guitar. “Get this fucking microphone on! Maybe it’s not plugged in” before resolving the issue and playing “Clap”. “Perpetual Change” is dedicated to “mother earth” and Squire forgets a cue at 7:40, but the band recovers nicely. “I’ve Seen All Good People”, which was usually earlier in the set serves as the closer.

The second disc is Sirene’s version of the November 24th, 1971 Academy Of Music tape that was released recently by Tarantura as Live At The Academy. The musical content, quality of tape and timing are all identical to the previous release so nothing here is gained except having a second option for this show. It might have been better if Sirene used the March 16th Tucson tape, which has never been released, instead of duplicating Tarantura’s work.

Since it was the previous evening’s show it has a stronger thematic link to the tape on the first disc and would have made more sense. Sirene use a photo for the front taken during the Close To The Edge recording session at Advision studios in the summer of 1972. The inside has the band pictures from the Fragile booklet and some live shots including the same three pictures taken at the Ohio high school from November, 1971 that Tarantura used for the poster in their release. There are so few tapes and even fewer titles from Yes’ groundbreaking Fragile tour which make releases like this very important for Yes collectors and is recommended.

Yes Live At The San Bernardino Swing Auditorium 1972-03-17 master reel-to-reel AUD tape (first time in circulation) Opener for Black Sabbath with mp3 sample

The Black Sabbath portion of this evening is still an active torrent with many seeders: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=107684&hit=1

The Wild Turkey portion of this evening is also active, with several seeders:

Here then finally is the final portion of this incredible evening. The hype about this show on ForgottenYesterdays.com is true...

This show is to die for.

I want to personally thank the following Dime members for help in reconstructing this tape:

Five for supplying samples of another show for comparison
The Toole Man for additional help

As indicated in previous torrents, the Yes portion lay in two unrelated pieces. Although the music itself seemed to overlap, something was wrong with the performance in both. At first I wasn't even sure they were the same show. The problem ended up being that there was a master and a copy. The master was pitched 29 cents too slow, and the copy was pitched about twice that too fast. One of the properties of speeding up music is that the recording will sound better, up to a point. All the frequencies move up; the recording sounds crisper. So, the copy initially sounded better than the original.

Once the speed was corrected on the original, it sounded almost as good as the copy. But, once the copy was corrected, the original was much better. I hope that makes sense, we are talking cents of change here, not semitones (100 cents = 1 semitone). SoundForge 6.0 was used for all processes.

The 48 minutes here are I have of this show. The rumors are that they played for 90 minutes, but there don't appear to be any missing portions. An anti-alias filter was applied during speed correction (Google "Nyquist Frequency" if you are curious as to why). Multiple EQ passes were also used to bring out the finer details of the music. No noise reduction was used. Over 8 hours of work went into this torrent over the course of about five weeks, I hope you enjoy it.

Yes played the "Fragile" portions of this show very close to the vest. It's much more of an extended album feast than present day shows are. The performance is *wonderful*, with some drug-related taper talk thrown into the mix.
