LDB Special Series #78

Hello! Here is a new series from my collection. After the Master Series, here is the Special Series.
Out of my 6,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed! I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my reward for all the work involved in this project.

Right after Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman left Yes at the end of 1979, the remaining three members begun rehearsing in search for new ideas. Actually, they were finalizing what they had started when Jon and Rick were still in, working on three tracks (Tempus Fugit, Does It Really Happen? and Run Through the Light) that would be later released on Drama, plus a few more which would be left out of the album. While they were rehearsing, a young band was playing in the studio next door, notably two young musicians called Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, better known as The Buggles. The pair introduced themselves to Yes and the rest is history. But what Trevor and Geoff heard from their recording session is what you hear here, known as the Drama Sessions. This is a very interesting piece of history, the bridge between the easy pop of Tormato and the new-wave influenced Drama album. Trevor and Geoff would bring extra track to the band, notably Into the Lens, Man In a White Car and We Can Fly From Here.

Soundwise, these are very nice instrumental sessions. I had two version which differ a bit on setlist, so I decided to include both. Version 2 has Song No.4 (Satellite) in a much longer version than in 1. Both are NOT sourced from any silver in circulation but from tapes I received in trade about 20 years ago.

Note: these sessions took place before Trevor and Geoff joined Yes, hence without keyboards or vocals. All the material present in this demos has not been officially released.

I think this was originally seeded by Relayerman,it had LDB series on the notes.
So thanks to them.Song No.4 (Satellite) was removed, as it was released on the Drama expanded C.D. you can identify it from around 1.07 mark Steve hits the wrong chord. and the long version of this was the same version edited together. There was another version of the same four tracks in a lower generation at the wrong speed on the original disc, but it was just more of the same. There was a lot of tape hiss on these recordings,so did a fade out at the end of some tracks so it wasn't so noticeable.Tweaked the EQ a bit and that's all folks.

These sessions took place before Trevor and Geoff joined Yes, hence without keyboards or vocals. All the material present in this torrent has not been officially released.

The FLAC files (created April 2004) received in a trade (summer 2007) have not been altered.
The original checksums and info file are in the OriginalFiles folder.
This info file has been revised and new checksums made because 3 tracks were removed from the original FLAC file set.
I don't know for sure but this is probably from the CD "Drama Sessions: Original Master" - White Rock Research.
Cover art is included, as it was then, where the source is given as: Master Reel>CDR>EAC>CDR>EAC>FLAC.
So add to that: >DIME>you.

Just to be clear, 'Satellite' is nothing like 'Song No.4 (Satellite)', and it includes bits of a bassline that later became 'I'm Running'.

Many thanks to whoever wrote the note at the end of this page (Eric?), his friend Chuck, and Rudi for the trade.

Lineage that I know CDR>EAC>FLAC

Here's the story....

A guy I work with's neighbor's friend bought an old building in Atlanta a while back and apparently at one time it was some sort of recording studio. Well in the process of cleaning out the place he went up to the attic and discovered all these old tapes. So he tells his friend about it and says one of them is by a band called Yes. Well the friend says you have to copy that one to CD and give it to my neighbor as he is a huge Yes fan. Well he gave me a copy which according to him it is a rehearsal or something when they were working on the Drama album. I have no other info, but the person that made the CD photographed the actual tape case and made a CD cover from it. The information below was taken from this photo. I am still trying to get a scan of the photo but as of yet have been unable to do so.
It probably was not all taped on the 18th but I am using that date as that is what was on the Tape case.

Many thanks to my friend Chuck for this one.

1.01 We Can Fly From Here (early studio demo) alternate source (5.56)
1.02 We Can Fly From Here (later full studio mix) (6.23)

Here are 2 studio recording versions of 'We Can Fly From Here' which, while performed live during the 1980 tour, was never released on a Yes studio album. The story goes that the demo version of the song was done by Trevor Horne and Geoff Downes and brought to the remaining members of Yes at the time (Chris, Alan, Steve). The boys like what they heard and asked the Buggles to join them as Yes. There is some debate that the demo version is Chris and Alan on bass and drums instead of Trevor and Geoff doing the instruments, but I dunno (I'll leave that to people in the know to argue about).
BTW, after the song fades at the end there is more music. The story goes that the reason it is not completed is because Trevor didn't like what he heard and told the engineer to cut off the taping. Who knows?

The second version included here is a later mix of the band doing a full version, recorded (or mixed) on April 18, 1980 at the Townhouse Recording Studio.

The first version here is an upgrade to the badly recorded, possible lossy version uploaded earlier. It can be found here:

version 2: from CD in a trade called Drama Sessions, Original Masters (White Rock Research label) > FLAC

Denny Somach Producing 3 Hours Of Yes Pegged For NBC

By Doug Hall

NEW YORK -- Denny Somach, who produces the daily "Rock Report" on NBC's Source Network and handles the midday shift on WYSP-FM in Philadelphia, has returned from London where he interviewed the newly reorganized Yes for material for the first of a new music series from the Source beginning in August.

The three-hour special on Yes will coincide with the release on Atlantic of its first new album since Rick Wakeman and John Anderson dropped out of the group and Buggles members Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs joined.

Somach, who will host the show, expects to premiere two tracks from the album as well as two tracks from never-released live recordings that were to be part of a now-scrapped two-disk album once planned last year.

The show will be followed by a tour by the group of the U.S. and Canada that is set for three weeks, but may be expanded.

Somach says the special will "not be your typical interview and music special, but will follow a magazine format."

In addition to interviews with Yes members, done between recording sessions for the new album, Somach interviewed Atlantic chairman Ahmet Ertegun, Yes manager Brian Len, Frank Barcelona of Premier Talent and promoter Harvey Goldsmith.

Somach is scheduled to do five specials before the end of the year. All will not necessarily be three hours in length. He expects to travel abroad for some of these shows.

In preparation for this show Somach listened to 30 hours of previously taped interviews including the group's first radio interview from 1971 on WMMR-FM Philadelphia. This interview was conducted by then WMMR staffer Ed Sciaky, who is now with WIOQ-FM in Philadelphia.

Somach, who sat in on a number of the recording sessions, says the new album "is the best thing they have done in several years."

He reports that the new Yes does not sound like the Buggles, even with Horn singing lead vocals. "Horn sounds more like John Anderson than John Anderson," he says.

Horn and Downs contributed two songs to the new album: "I Am A Camera" and "Machine Messiah," Somach reports. Somach also says the new group has a sound that goes back to the "Close To The Edge" and "Fragile" albums of several years back.

Clevor Trevors notes................
This is the Drama rehearsals for the then upcoming 1980 tour.
Quality isn't too good and thats being kind. It was a tone slower
(that's two frets on the guitar) Did a quick speed correction in Audacity.
It's a bit hissy. No noise reduction was used. For die hard or completists only.
We're all on diets so didn't eat anything while doing this.

Description A little bit of not-all-that-dramatic volume / tone fluctuation at the beginning; I think it levels out soon enough - generally a nice audience recording from the Drama tour that I got from Dime and know absolutely nothing about for reasons explained in the new info file whose text follows. (The moral of the story is that the good old "info.txt" filename may not be completely safe from Bram's contraptions and a Dime page is truly saved when the file size reads greater than 0 kb). :-)

Interesting bit of quote from Diary Of A Man Who Vanished, I do believe, at the beginning of Tempus Fugit while Chris is waiting for the invisible hand to pass him a new bass through a trap door, or something like that, according to the accounts at Forgotten Yesterdays.

Thank you to whoever posted this here before.

comments:
I dunno, sometimes it seems it's just not a glasnostrd19 upload, if there isn't some weird twist to its history. Such as this one. A couple of buddies and myself went from Boston to Portland, to see three-fifths of a Yes concert. We got there in time, but they decide we got time, let's have a nice lobster dinner before the show. Not a bad idea, very New England, lobster is popular eats here. Especially in Portland, Maine. Famous for good crab and lobster (too bad that I can't eat either, and don't care for it much myself). Timing wasn't good though. One of them had my ticket. So it gets to near 8, then 8:15, we're supposed to be seeing a Buggles/Yes show and both my buds are still plowing their traps full of seafood. Somewhere. The crowd starts entering, the music begins, finally one of them emerges, still not finished. I'm ready to nail him in the face. Concert cuttage, even if it is BUGGLES yes, even if it"s Courtney Love! is TOTALLY bonos audios!
I've lost a few friends because of that attitude (not here, I don't think.) I thought this company understood this, both like Yes alot. NOW I find out, only sorta kinda with this Drama tour version.
Security guard is not sure what to make of my recorder but has plenty of time to look it over since everyone else is seated watching the beginning of the show. Finally he says okay go ahead.
The Sony 158/ 153 and 152 decks were made to record, but not made to be inconspicuous. (and they're not). Well hey Jon Anderson didn't show up but does that make it a "no" concert? I wouldn't go thaaat far. This thing was my first Yes concert ever, and it's hard to call any concert without Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson in it a Yes concert for me. This was especially evident in some of the Anderson Yes songs played in this concert. Trevor Horne is not Jon Anderson, and very few have his vocal range. I thought most of the Drama songs sounded quite good, and that was what I was most familiar with then, so I liked that, and go through this, the white car suite and we can fly also sounded well played and sung. Trevor tries to scream for lack of a high note in YIND, kind of amusing but it doesn't work very well. The Boston show (part 2 in terms of the concert date of this New England Drama) is better in parts, this in others, I think this recording came out a little better (crowd not as loud, also on the floor so the sound may be a bit more present here than in Boston show), but they're both masters, and sound pretty decent for hockey arena concert auds. I was on the floor for this, about 25 rows back, maybe about 10 seats to the right of dead center, I think this sounds a little clearer than the Boston one, and helped to convince me the only good Dolby.... is Thomas. (more on that subject later). This was my only visit (so far) to the Cumbersome County Civic Center. Portland is a nice place. That may be partly because it's so cumbersome (and roundabout) to get there. Couldn't go in a white car, couldn't fly from here, and yes, I really had to go through waiting outside the place for the bums with my ticket to finish their preshow lobster dinners, then after I got my ticket, did something I have never done before at an arena show- left my tape recorder recording on a seat while I was looking for my buddies (also my ride from Portland to Boston) who like I had not seen a show in Portland before. That was not the reason for the cut in YIND, someone bumped into the deck accidentally while going to their seat. Apparently the part while the deck was unattended (about 10 minutes) came out fine without interruption. If I had tried this the next week in Boston, I doubt I ever would have seen the deck or microphone again.
This was a night I hope I never have to repeat... except the concert. I did and do enjoy hearing that again and now I can invite you to also. And Remember, IT's NOT real Yes (from 77-80 at least) without the PSEUDOPHONIC SURROUND MERRY GO ROUND STEREO SOUND. If it is, someone sold/traded you a bootleg bootleg and it is 0% yes.
At least here, you get HALF of yes. three wholes, 2 Buggles make 1 whole, and 2 imposters.
In glasnostrd19speak, even though Yes officially became the "Maybe" in 1980, Drama was a good tour, one of the only tours by anyone I saw twice, still sounded "yessy". I like the 90125 tour too, but that does NOT sound "yessy" to me at all. Sounds like Yes got their 84 tour confused with U-2's 92 Popmart tour to me.

Do not sell this recording.

Several years ago I gathered up all the sources I had to this FM broadcast and made a 2-disc set which was the most complete version of the show I'd heard. Thanks go to Dave E. for providing me with those elusive UK version tracks. Here is the show minus the commercially released tracks. This runs about 67 minutes. Regardless of who/what screwed up the broadcast we have about 3/4 of the show. We are missing the Young Peoples Guide to Orchestra intro, Does It Really Happen, maybe Parallels (they were still playing it at this point in the tour), and Amazing Grace/The Fish.

FROM THE ORIGINAL NOTES:
Several years ago I gathered up all the sources I had to this FM broadcast and made a 2-disc set which was the most complete version of the show I'd heard. Thanks go to Dave E. for providing me with those elusive UK version tracks. Regardless of who/what screwed up the broadcast we have about 3/4 of the show. We are missing the Young Peoples Guide to Orchestra intro, Does It Really Happen, maybe Parallels (they were still playing it at this point in the tour), and Amazing Grace/The Fish.

comments:
Although I've seen several concerts at Boston Garden, this is the only Yes show I ever saw there. There would be one more after this one in 1984 (9012live tour) but someone who saw that told me it was a really lousy show, bad sound and performance, if that is so, (and the source of that info is an avid Yeshead, pretty in the know about them) than this was the last GOOD Yes show at Boston Garden (there were many, starting in 2/74 which was previously posted here on dime by at least one other uploader. Before that it was the Music Hall).
There was a bit of a story to this show- I lost my ticket on the way in, fortunately my friend had an extra one, and unlike the Portland one a week earlier where I got in late, this one is complete and uncut show. It also has an extra song they didn't do in Maine (Parallels) and alot more crowd noise but the payoff is a more inspired concert and you can hear it pretty clearly. It seems like almost all the shows I saw at Boston Garden, I was about halfway back from the stage, maybe 5-7 rows back from the hockey boards which isn't that bad a spot for recording.
I didn't have specially reserved seats or anything, just whatever I could get. I believe this concert was one of the last times I used Dolby B for a master cassette. (The Portland one was done without it. I haven't posted it yet but probably will). I've had very bad luck recording Yes concerts, out of 7 tries, this is the only one without any cuts/problems. 3 others came out well with only one or two fairly minor, or now remedied problems. 1 didn't come out at all, the best one was taken by a bouncer bastard just as roundabout started- 20th row dead center D-6 tape, I never got to hear it but someone did! and I missed about a half hour of 89 Maine ABWH show. This was a good show. I've only heard maybe 4 of the Drama shows. this may be the best one I've heard so far for performance. The recording is not too bad either for Boston Garden.
I don't have alot from there to post, but since an unknown lineage version was popular recently on dime, here is a 3 step torrent version, so you hear it, as my master tape says it.
This is one of my more played master tapes, because I enjoyed this tour and the Drama material. Fortunately, it's on Maxell. Trevor Horne doesn't sound quite as bad singing Jon Anderson as I would, but at times it's close. (that's not good). But he delivers a very good performance I thought in all the "non'Jon" songs in this show, including We can Fly from
Here and (do we really have to) go through this? All of the Drama songs and those two sound very nice here to my ears in this show. Hopefully now they will sound as nice as my analog master will permit for all to hear it.
But for the sake of diehardists, this comes with a Yes warning. No Jon Anderson + No Rick Wakeman = for many Yessheads, it's not yes, or half a yes, something other than yes, the Buggles with Yes' guitarist and rhythm section, you get the idea. ect..
So in glasnostrd19speak, this ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls and hemaphrodytes alike, is the Maybe. The 66% Yes. Almost Yes, (or if the mods don't object to my attempt at an accurate torrent description),
This is Yes, sort of. And yours, is Trevor's disgrace. Didn't like the roundabout (sick to death of hearing it as well) and the starship trooper definitely not the best version (imho), the rest is quite nice.
Oh I almost forgot to mention. Since this is a first time master seed, this is from a fresh transfer. My previous version of this was circulated some, and the quality seemed OK on it, I think this may sound a bit better. If you have an old version maybe you can tell me if it's better or not.

do not sell this recording (that makes yes say no)
trade freely and losslessly.
you can never say no to YES

NOTES FROM TWO OFFICIAL "BLIND" B80 PROJECT TEST GROUP LISTENERS

"What a treat it is to listen to this lovingly mastered recording of the Yes DRAMA lineup live. I kept finding myself getting lost in the performance (which in itself actually says quite a bit about the sonics). By any DRAMA tour standard of comparison, the sound quality is nothing short of breathtaking.

The vocals here have an amazingly lifelike presence throughout, often seeming to leap right out of the speakers or headphones. One of the most impressive aspects of Lestat's releases is the almost holographic sense of venue ambience he and Balrog consistently achieve-you really feel like you are there in the concert hall with the audience. Finally, he consistently maintains the full dynamic range of the performance-not just in transitions between louder and quieter parts, but perhaps just as importantly in the detail with which we can still hear the quieter nuances in the midst of relatively loud passages.

Overall, the sound here is miles beyond any other live recording of this Yes lineup that I have ever heard. The DRAMA tracks in the official THE WORD IS LIVE are barely listenable after hearing this. I
recently heard another recording from the tour that was quite good, but completely lacking the incredible nuance and sense of presence and space so abundant in this release.

We are all incredibly lucky that Balrog happened to tape this performance, that Lestat had the expertise to master it so beautifully, and that both of them have the generosity to share their efforts with such a wide community of fans. I have yet to see Gromek's artwork design, but I suspect that it will be a joy to behold. Many thanks to the three of them (as well as to the past and present members of Yes, of course) for allowing me to relive some of the magic of so many years ago."

- "NorthNYMark"

"The triumvirate is complete-B78, B79 and now B80. This latest show represents a triumph for Messrs. LESTAT and BALROG. What is presented for you is not only a stunning capture of a great night on an underrated tour but the application of unparalleled audio engineering to bring out the very best the Master tape had to offer. So with that said, enjoy the very best recording of the Drama Tour!"

- "Jackstraw42"

A NOTE FROM THE PRODUCERS

No matter how you feel about the DRAMA (Buggles) era of Yes, there's no denying something very exciting and different happened in the album and tour. To some the departure of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman from the lineup and their replacement by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes meant the band no longer deserved to call itself Yes. But the concert is still very much Yes music. The old songs may not sound quite right on first listen, but there are some remarkable moments in the performances. And keep in mind that Anderson and Wakeman made a real contribution to Drama before departing. Yes purists ("Troopers" if you like) would do themselves a favor in giving this one a chance.

Boston Garden was only the ninth show in the tour. Trevor Horn's voice was still intact enough to sound almost exactly like Jon Anderson much of the time. The circular sound system was not quite the same as the one used in the preceding Tormato concerts, but it was still much better than the stacks used in the GFTO tour. Very few rock concert sound systems could overcome the notorious Boston Garden mid-bass"boom" that can be heard in almost all recordings made there. Only Yes' circular system and Pink Floyd's "quad" system were able to accomplish it.

Steve Howe - guitars
Chris Squire - bass
Alan White - percussion
Trevor Horn - vocals
Geoff Downes - keyboards

SOURCE AND AUDIO WORK AT LENGTH -

Yet another top shelf pre-1990s analog AR rivaling many from the post 1990 DAT era.

Like others it nonetheless required months of work and testing of results by multiple listeners in a wide variety of playback systems to give up the best it has to offer.

Every effort was made to reveal all possible detail in each tone of each instrument as far as it occurred in the band's PA mix, and we're pleased with the result overall. Lower crash cymbal tones make one important litmus, so too even audience clapping.

This project was made especially challenging by Yes' own 1980 sound system, which was not only different but inferior to the one used in 1978/1979. We can only speculate as to why, but the PA output was quite poor for Yes and heavily afflicted with wildly fluctuating hiss, distortion, a lack of some lower high frequencies - robbing it of the 'warmth' among other things Yes concert sound had been famous for - and a certain overall 'tinniness' [resembling digital compression].

PA distortion occurs mainly in Squire's bass and at times in midrange keyboard sounds, becoming especially terrible during "The Fish", "Into The Lens" and Downe's solo. Lower cymbal tones in particular didn't come through in the Yes mix nearly as well as in previous tours, leaving them 'thin' sounding by comparison. Making matters worse, percussive 'swish' and 'swirl' were chronic in this PA system. It seems to have been weirdly chronic in 1977 too, but in the 1980 system it was much worse. The Garden's legendary acoustics and a [likely] new Yes soundman definitely contributed to and aggravated all of these problems.

None of the described distortion can even be partly mitigated without approaches like compression highly destructive to desirable signal. On the brighter side we can still hear more brilliant detail in this
DRAMA tour recording than any other I've come across, including the DRAMA tour material featured in THE WORD IS LIVE. "Thinness" in lower highs and upper mids also mitigated fairly well with EQ settings carefully crafted to avoid altering other things, and upper high frequencies came out very well.

A few miscellaneous annoyances include a strange aberration during"Into the Lens" suggesting a sudden, radical shift in deck settings or a recording splice but most likely another PA output artifact. During this event, sound sharpens strongly in both channels and shifts hard to left. It has been smoothened out a bit, but slicing it out would have taken too much of an important musical passage. As "Machine Messiah" prepares to start hiss suddenly drops out then returns, somewhat more likely to be a brief deck offset but could still easily be in the PA system output.

Actual tape hiss where it can be distinguished from PA output hiss is noticeable, but enough of it occurs above a 19.3KHz signal 'event horizon' an FFT filter set there allowed avoidance of dedicated noise reduction. "B78" had no such filtering, and while no signal was lost in either recording is considerably hissier.

Many thanks to Yes, then and now

Special thanks to Gromek for artwork so perfectly evocative of the show's energy and this effort.

Endless, endless thanks to Barry for another miraculous AR, the expertise and bravery it required.

Please share freely but losslessly, and never, EVER even THINK of selling for any sum anywhere. Reseed or redistribute this recording in its complete and original form only. Should we become aware of an incomplete reseed or distribution, we will publicly discredit the party responsible.

NOTES FROM BARRY:

This is the third of three Boston Garden shows that I taped while Yes had the incredible rotating stage and circular sound system. All three (1978, 1979, and 1980) have now been remastered by the amazing Monsieur Lestat and are seeding on Dime.

This concert was also recorded by glasnostrd19 and appeared on Dime several months ago. While I applaud glasnostrd19's recording, I think you'll find that you've never heard anything quite like this one before.

There are three commercial bootlegs that I know about. I don't know which source was used to make them:

Drama in the Garden (RR00-019) Dramatic Yes (four tracks) Where the Lens is Wide (fat cat records fcr-cd 90124)

Fat Cat Records had the audacity to declare a copyright on the recording: "copyright fat cat records - a product of Norway - all rights reserved". There really is a Fat Cat Records but it's in England, not Norway, and I'm sure it had nothing to do with the bootleg.

This recording is listenable at concert volume on audiophile-quality equipment. No constraints are placed on the dynamic range as is the case in commercial live recordings. For this reason, the peaks may exceed the capabilities of consumer-quality audio systems resulting in distortion from frequencies that cannot be properly reproduced.

To obtain audiophile-quality equipment at an affordable price, consider getting high-end headphones, a headphone amplifier, and a CD player from eBay or other sources of pre-owned audio equipment. You will find that it's well worth the expense.

On a personal note, my goal in taping concerts has always been to achieve time travel. I want go back in time and relive musical experiences that were much too important to me to allow them be heard
once and lost forever. And I want the experience to be available to everyone who loves the music.

Anyone who has ever taped a concert knows that there's a price to pay, not only in terms of money spent and risk taken, but in the way it diminishes your own enjoyment of the show. You have to monitor the mikes and the deck. If you allow yourself to get too much into the music and forget about the equipment, you screw up. So it's sort of being the designated driver. You can enjoy yourself, but not too much.

The reason I bring this up is to point out how much Lestat's remastering work makes up for the enjoyment lost at the time the recording was made. Now I can relive the experience while completely
relaxed. Other than the absence of smoke in the air and the ambience of the old Boston Garden, it's not much different from being there. With no equipment to worry about I can let the music carry me to
places I've never been. I sincerely hope it provides the same enjoyment for you.

- Barry

NOTES FROM GROMEK:

As I was such a young lad when DRAMA came out I can't say much about that time, but I do remember that it went by unnoticed by me (let's face it - Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman were not a part of Yes anymore, so that was that, it was over!) and I went on to explore other styles of music and of course Jon's Song of Seven album.

I did like The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" song, but Yes was simply not Yes without two very important members, so there. Hearing and reading stories about ex-Yes members saying Yes really should not have done DRAMA, and that it really should not be talked about, was an extra reason for me to leave it for what it was (without hearing a second of music from the actual album).

Boy was I wrong!

Some years later I decided to explore the new Yes incarnation with Trevor Rabin, and although it did not compare to the old sound remember that I loved the new sound. So then I also had a go at DRAMA, and was pleasantly surprised by that too! I really liked the album and after a few listening sessions I decided I loved it, and everyone who said that it should never have been made was wrong!

Now years and years later DRAMA comes to life again! Lestat has done wonders with this recording (another excellent one "Recorded by Balrog") and I was happy to be part of the project too, although my part is nothing compared to what he and Lestat had to go through to get it to sound like this!

This time I was inspired by an image created by Barry and the lyrics from the DRAMA album - mostly Machine Messiah - and the title "The Singular Eye" derives from that. So after grabbing some images from my usual sources (all having something to do with eyes and digital manipulation) I went on to make a collage and manipulated it (using PSP X2), producing what you see now as a finished cover.

So when you listen to this excellent live performance, try to envision or look at the art, and combine the two mentally. It should be very effective.

Well, enough from me, I hope you like what I did, but all praise goes to Barry and Lestat, as they were the men who provided us with another gem to be circulated among Yes fans.

A FURTHER NOTE ON THE "DRAMA" ERA FROM NORTHNYMARK:

While a sizeable number of Yes fans will probably always consider the Drama album and tour questionable at best and an atrocity at worst, for many of us the Drama lineup continues to occupy a very special place in our musical worlds.

When I first heard the studio album, I actually knew relatively little about Yes: getting into music in the early '80s, I became a fan of Asia and began tracking down the individual members' back catalogues. When I finally found an elusive (at that time) cassette copy of Drama, I had an exam over A Tale of Two Cities the next day-and I had yet to begin the book! So I had to promise to wait until after school the next day to listen (which made it indeed the best of times and the worst of times). That first listen the next afternoon was one of those magical moments that will always remain vivid in my memory.

Geoff Downes once referred to the album's compositions as "little masterworks," and it certainly seemed a fitting description of the sprawling structure and jarring mood and tempo changes of "Machine
Messiah," the oddly touching melancholy of "White Car" and "Into the Lens," the unexpected majesty of the coda to "Does It Really Happen," the slightly surreal synthesizer effects of "Run Through the Light," and the sheer virtuosity of "Tempus Fugit." Nothing else in the Yes catalogue (or that of anyone else) sounds quite like it.

One of the most impressive aspects of Lestat’s releases is the almost holographic sense of venue ambience he and Balrog consistently achieve—you really feel like you are there in the concert hall with the audience. Finally, he consistently maintains the full dynamic range of the performance—not just in transitions between louder and quieter parts, but perhaps just as importantly in the detail with which we can still hear the quieter nuances in the midst of relatively loud passages.

Overall, the sound here is miles beyond any other live recording of this Yes lineup that I have ever heard. The DRAMA tracks in the official THE WORD IS LIVE are barely listenable after hearing this. I recently heard another recording from the tour that was quite good, but completely lacking the incredible nuance and sense of presence and space so abundant in this release.

We are all incredibly lucky that Balrog happened to tape this performance, that Lestat had the expertise to master it so beautifully, and that both of them have the generosity to share their efforts with such a wide community of fans. I have yet to see Gromek’s artwork design, but I suspect that it will be a joy to behold.

The ‘test listener’ comments above are true, but it must also be acknowledged the exceptional capture and excavation reveal PA system output flaws more effectively as well. It’s a major tradeoff – Yes’ sound system in 1980 was drastically inferior to what had come just a year earlier.

The infamous Garden acoustics interacted with already compromised PA output to create intermittent, untreatable distortion – particularly chronic ‘swish’ and ‘swirl’ in percussion and an effect resembling a ‘stretched rubber band’ or ‘paper in fan’ in the bass guitar at times. On occasion certain midrange keyboards are also afflicted, and some rich, warm lower high frequencies to be heard in the TORMATO shows just weren’t in the 1980 PA output at all.

In some ways the many circulating low-end ARs from this tour actually seem to sound better simply because they don’t capture the 1980 PA problems nearly as well, but they don’t capture as well what was good either. There’s good aplenty to enjoy here, both in sound capture and performance [several vocal train wrecks notwithstanding]. I was among the mortified when Yes got Buggled, but naturally went out and bought DRAMA anyway, enjoyed its many fine moments, and have enjoyed immensely this recording. Like other project members, I’m willing to bet you will too.

Many thanks to Yes, then and now

Special thanks to Gromek for artwork so perfectly evocative of the show’s energy and this effort.

Endless, endless thanks to Barry for another miraculous AR, the expertise and bravery it required.

A rather strange recording, each track fades in at the start, and fades out at the end.
Trevor nearly forgets where he is.....This is my first time to err err Maryland.
There are quite a few screamers nearby the taper.
The last three tracks are prone to distortion, it must have been the screamers.
Not one of the best audio quality Drama shows, but the best 1980 version of Parallels.
If you listen it's a Duet!

This is our second night in Philadelphia Trevor says to a rather enthusiastic crowd, bit of a muddy recording but a high energy performance. Couple of cuts in Does It Really Happen?, couple of talkers nearby, it may be our tapers. Some songs have the spoken intro cut out. It sounds like the tape is starting to stretch on And You And I and Go Through This ,as it gets faded out early. Side Two gets it on The Fish when the speed cranks up. So this might be for diehard fans only.

Yes at the International Amphitheatre Chicago Illinois September 22nd 1980

This was one of those recordings that grew on me the more plays it got. The sound was not too hot as the Amphitheater can do to you. But this really ended up a great listening show. Thumbs up on this performance. The show was in the round (revolving center stage) and I believe this was the first of two nights. There was a power failure that lasted 4 or five minutes. The main man from Celebration Flipside (promoter) comes out on stage to explain what had happened.
without Anderson I would have not expected this to be too good. But I was wrong!

notes from the seed (Matt P.):

I listened to this one the other day in its entirety. It sounds
pretty nice, a few minor issues. There is a tape flip at the very
end of "Clap" and one after "Tempus Fugit." Almost all the music
is intact but both Steve and Chris' introductions are missing.

The audience is chatty in places, but I did enjoy the tapers
commentary. "I got another tape ready to go...just in case they
bust into 'Gates Of Delirium' ". Classic. They were trying to
determine where to swap tapes, and were surprised by the
inclusion of "Parallels" in the set. Anyway, its a good sounding
show....not as good as my recent 2001 and 2002 trees, but hey,
this is twenty years earlier! It is the best sounding Drama show
I've heard.

This cassette recording sounds a bit chewed at the start
i think our taper must only have had 1 old C60 tape.
A rather shortened recording, and shorter than you think.
When i originally posted this last year sndchaser pointed out
that two tracks We Can Fly From Here and Tempus Fugit were in
fact from the MSG 6th Sept show,as they were officially released
on The Word Is Live i've replaced them with tracks from the
Philadelphia 13th Sept. show.

By request I'm offering this Yes show. There is really nothing remarkable about this recording, but since it was requested I'm offering it. I will uploading 3 more 1980 shows by request in the next few days as well.

I got this show in a trade on tape way back during the '80s and I would guess its at least 2nd gen and is incomplete (I have never seen a complete version of this show so if anyone has one...). My notes tell me that the 1st song is from a different source, but the same show. The recording itself is chopped up; meaning the taper probably stopped the tape between songs, but they are in the correct order. There is also some tape 'swirling' that is on my tapes so I can't correct that, but it only happens a few times at the beginning of some of the songs.

Clever Trevors notes...........
A very rough recording, that has a bit of distortion from time to time and howling microphone feedback, don't let that put you off though! It sounds from time to time that our taper was adjusting his manual recording level,it goes up and down during Geoffs solo. The original disc had almost 18 tracks on one disc and 12 on the other, this must have been transferred on a C.D. recorder that automatically numbers the tracks every time there is no music or a quiet passage for 3 seconds. No Go Through This for some reason, and Roundabout cuts off before the end,so did a fade out. Re edited almost back to normal. We all had nice food fight while doing this.....................

One of the better recorded Drama shows. Some between songs chat has been cut.
And the date seems to be October 11th not the 12th as most copies are named. It's quick to rectify. Usually Trevor says after Yours Is No Disgrace, well this is my first time at........or well this is our second night at....but before Go Through This Trevor says, well it's a Saturday night. So it is 11th October 1980.

I'm seeding this Drama Tour show by special request. I got this show in a tape trade in the early '80s and is not all that good. It is, however, an early UK tour show and Trevor's voice is not all that bad in this one. There are a couple of tiny breaks in songs, but does not detract from the overall performance. I would guess that the casual Yes listener would bypass this show. I have tweaked it as best as possible. It appears that when the taper taped it the levels were set a little too high as there is some distortion here and there. I would also guess this is at least a 2nd gen recording. The audience appears a little rowdy. At one point during Man In A White Car someone clearly yells out,"Bring back Wakeman!".

Here is another Drama Tour show by request. This is one of my favorite shows and I probably would have seeded this at some point regardless of the request. Yes, Trevor Horn's vocals are struggling, but this is a great recording (I give it an A-) and the performance is wonderful. Also, the recording captures the intimacy of the theatre setting in my opinion. I got this show in a tape trade back in the '80s and have just now finished converting and tweaking it for CD for my collection. I don't know the generation, but it is low. I did do speed correction as well as it was just a tad slow, probably un-noticeable by most.

As Yes started their UK tour, the performance of Go Through This changed with a lot more keyboards, which gives the song a different feel. Some of Trevors between song chat has been cut, maybe that was our taper saving time on the cassette. Worth it alone for a great performance of Machine Messiah. Listen to Steve with his Harmonizer 4 years before the other Trevor.

Another high energy Drama show, the band sound like they can't wait to get started. The recording was a semi tone too high, that's one fret on the guitar
to you and me. Did a pitch correction and joined a few tracks and split some others. Lowered the treble a bit,a couple of fades and that's all folks.....
New artwork included with newly found Drama pictures from Newcastle City Hall 1980 a great job by Steve23yh.

Played but not on this recording: Starship Trooper, Roundabout,
Man in a White Car (a capella) (from Forgotten Yesterdays)

Notes: Very good to almost excellent (though incomplete) 'Drama' era
performance. Edinburgh proves to be a tough crowd, as they jeer Geoffrey
Downes when his keyboard solo moves into 'Video Killed the Radio Star'
and generally give the Buggles a lukewarm welcome. The UK audiences
were definitely NOT as receptive to Horn and Downes as the American
audiences had been.

Trevor's voice is pretty much gone by this point, but, he makes
a valiant effort. Chris isn't really much better on harmony. But,
there's still energy, all driven by a powerhouse Alan White performance.
And, as usual, Steve Howe more than delivers.

Whatever you think of this band's intrepretations of the classic
material (I think it's interesting - I'd like to hear a rehearsal
of them trying 'Siberian Khatru'), the 'Drama' material
definitely makes it worthwhile.

Did anyone else notice in the recent 4 hour Yes documentary that
Chris Squire says he actually asked Trevor Horn to sing the Cinema
stuff FIRST?

Raised the volume slightly and brought up the left channel as it was about
nearly 10% quieter, except on Machine Messiah where the right channel was
nearly 10% lower (work that one out) took out the odd harsh noise and clicks.
Almost forgot Happy Birthday to Trevor Horn 62 today 15th July.....

Thats putting it mildly......To those of a nervous disposition or easily offended, they ask him to go forth and fornicate, and one of those is very near our taper! Ironic really as Asia have played this song on past tours to applause all over the U.K. I doubt Geoff has nightmares about it,as i'm sure worse things have happened to him,for example Asia played in Newcastle (my home Town) several years ago.Someone jumped up on stage after the encore hugged and lifted Geoff up,then dropped him outch!

By request here is another 1980 Yes show from the Drama tour. The tour is almost over and it has taken its toll on Trevor Horn's voice. Quite evident in this recording. I got this in a trade some time ago on tape. The first 2 tracks are a bit muffled probably due to the taper's mics being hidden, but I'm guessing. I might have been able to brighten them up a bit, but there is already some hiss so brightening may have introduced even more. Hence, I chose not to try.

Did a speed/pitch change of 2.464% and a fade here and there so the
hiss wasn't so noticeable, reduced the hiss slightly on the first two tracks
cut out a couple of gaps and the odd pop and click.
stick with it as its a nice recording. Geoff seems to be having a problem
with his Fairlight on his solo spot,he does the start and finish on his piano.
Comedy moment just before We Can Fly From Here, someone shouts for Awaken.

Clever Trevors notes........
Not a bad sounding show,a lot of hiss on the quiet bits,so just did a slight
tonal adjustment, and a couple of fades. Go Through This was really quiet compared
to the other songs (patched from another show?) so adjusted the volume.
Trevor seems to be enjoying himself "I'm going to get Hollywood taken off my jacket
and Hammersmith put on" he tells the crowd. Is it me or does anyone else hear the
Duck call?

Clever Trevors notes.........
Our tapers sound an excitable bunch, shouting out the the song titles.
Funny moment during White Car someone asks "Can i be out please"
Not a bad sounding show, did a pitch correction and a slight adjustment
of Bass and Treble, got rid of a couple of loud cracks, some of the tracks faded
in and out,so just left them as they were. We all ate Cadburys Chocolate Buttons
while doing this.
