The Yes Album
Close to the Edge
Going For the One
Encore: Roundabout

Ever since Jon Anderson left Yes, the band has struggled along mightily with replacements. The last guy hired reminded you of a Broadway actor who was brought in to play the role of Anderson, and despite of what you might think of him, Anderson left an indelible mark as the vocalist of this legendary progressive act. Thus, a good replacement makes for a better Yes experience.

So fast forward to 2013, Yes is back on the road, and new singer Jon Davison is actually quite good. He looks like Anderson, circa 1972, and sings in the same lithing falsetto that Yes fans love but detractors would compare to the tragic (yet beautiful) voices of our time (Lemmy from Motorhead, all three chipmunks, Tiny Tim, the guy from the Darkness, etc…).

Thus, the band’s performance in San Francisco was the best of I’ve seen the quintet play since a show at the same hall back in 1997. Davison sang the songs just as Anderson would have (minus the rather strange and ethereal stage movements of Anderson), and the rest of the band played all of the songs from the three classic albums listed above with the same precision that fans have been accustomed to over the band’s 43-year career. But on this night, one Yes member stood above all others.

Guitarist Steve Howe, who on the past couple of tours looked about 20 years older than his actually age of 64 (and performed like it), played like a teenager again. His rippling runs and shading has always been a staple of the group’s best work, especially during the 70’s (every song played tonight came from that decade). But on this night Howe was engaged with the crowd (gasp!), moved around the stage rather joyfully (gasp!) and played the guitar like the legend he is (not so shocking).

The band’s only original member still active, Chris Squire, is easily one of the best bassists in rock history, and he can still play with a power and precision that leaves his contemporaries shaking their heads at his prowess. Drummer Alan White is rock solid as the foundation for the band’s rhythm section. Keyboardist Geoff Downes is familiar to Yes fans as Howe’s foil in Asia, and he can play just about anything that is thrown his way (and if you know Yes, the band throws quite a bit at the keyboardist).

Another reason this show worked (for me, anyway) is that the band played my three favorite albums, The Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going For the One, one right after the other, all the way thru. Highlights included a spectacular “Yours is No Disgrace,” which opened the first set, the always amazing "“And You and I," and the set-closing “Awaken,” one of the most beautiful pieces of music every penned. The band would have been lynched if it hadn’t included “Roundabout” as the encore, and it did, despite the fact that it is on the band’s other classic record, Fragile.”

Yes will probably be around for a few more years, and while the group is performing at this level, you should go see these legends, even if Anderson is not included.

LDB Master Series #332 (Metro Cubo is back to US!!!)

Out of my 7,000+ shows and radio broadcasts, I have many concerts that were special for some reasons: the setlist, the musicians, the venue or unexpected events. These are the ones I'd like to propose you. Most of these come from my cassettes collection, so they will be released at a slower pace than my Master Series! But you won't be disappointed!
I will try to gather the most unusual things I have in my collection and, as always, your feedback and comments will be my reward for all the work involved in this project.

DO NOT share this music on mp3, just convert it for your own use. Sharing mp3's is the right way to make me stop sharing music here.

Finally, some notes about your truly ldb: I have been a fan of live music since I was 9 years old (that is where I attended my very first show, a PFM/De André gig at Milano's Palalido) and my first taped show was at 11 using a crappy portable cassette player with embedded microphone. I become more serious about taping in 1983 when I started to record every show. In 1991 I acquired my first Sony Professional and in 2000 I moved to MiniDisc to finally settle on R-09 in early 2008.

I have seen nearly 500 shows in my career. Most of them were taped but for others bad luck struck and I could not record it: on top of my mind there's a Paul McCartney show in 1993 in Milano where I was caught by the security or Porcupine Tree in Roma in March 1999 when the DAT machine would seem to work but listening back to the tape there would just be a long bunch of silence. Or during a Y.Malmsteen show where I got so annoyed that I left halfway through the show and erased the tape and finally on a PFM show in Milano in 2007 where I had to leave before the encore because the baby-sitter had to leave early that evening. Some other times I was very close not to tape or had to do it in extremely difficult situations: for the four Peter Gabriel shows at Earls Court in 1987 security was checking tapers with metal detector; at the David Gilmour comeback show in London in 2001 at RFH I had the security guy sitting next to me but I managed to tape the show without checking one single time my MiniDisc!

There was a time I was travelling anywhere in Europe to see shows, especially if there was no touring in Italy: I remember Rush in Paris in 1992 when the trio did not even know what Italy was. I have seen shows at stadiums (Genesis at Wembley) and in places with 30 people (Porcupine Tree in Milano in 1997); bands that would later become huge (Pearl Jam in a free show for 150 people) and masters of jazz (Miles Davis or Sarah Vaughan). Shows I will never forget (Pink Floyd at Versailles castle) and some I would rather forget (no comment...).

I truly believe that live music is what keeps music alive, what make us enjoying it together, what allow us to have deep feelings and transmit it to others. Studio records are nowadays 'commodities': you can buy online as anonymous wav files and listen in your iPod or at home. Live music will always imply an effort to buy the tix, travel to the venue, see the show, think about it when coming back home.

Yes indeed, metro cubo is back to the US one year after recording the great ZPZ performance featuring Allan Holdsworth. This time I was lucky enough to capture Yes in one of the first dates of the Spring Tour 2013, featuring the entire performance of three historical albums: Close to the Edge, Going For The One and Yes Album. I was really looking forward to see it.

Going to shows in the US is somehow a weird situation for any europen and this gig was no exception. First, trying to purchase a ticket on the infamouse Ticketmaster site. It took me no less than 4 attempts before being successful. Most of times the site was not available or was on maintenance. Some others it only gave you the possibility to buy at least two tickets where I just needed one. Finally, I managed to purchase one only. Second, the huge price for the tickets where the minimum value was somewhere around 70$ but you could end up spending over 200$ if you wanted the super VIP which even allowed you to watch Chris Squire while he was in the toilet :-)

Anyway - on march 6th I left to LA and arrived one hour before the show. The Orpheum is a very nice theater but the nighbours do not seem so secure and I could not find a decent restaurant to grab something to eat within one mile. So I ended up having a low-quality burger at Carl´s which seems to be quite popular over there.

I entered the theatre among the first ones and noted that the Ticketmaster struck again by assigning me a seat not very far from the stage but completely on the left side. Luckily the sight was ok and the sound excellent on all the hall, so I could make a good recording. A few photos I enclose here will give you an idea on where I was located.

Another thing I will never understand is why the american folks do not stay quiet during concerts. They somehow feel so excited that they have to shout, scream, stand up not really caring if their neighbours would like to listen to the music or not. That evening I had tons of people standing up to find food and drinks back and forth which I am not really used too. In addition the nasty people from the venue were bothering those who have moved for a better seat after the concert had started, ending up in endless ticket checks and discussions because the guy did not want to come back to the seat he was originally located...weird...

Regardless, the concert has been a joy and the band in very good shape. You could see that they were still in the early phase of the tour because they did quite a few mistakes and Downes´ performance poor if compared to what Wakeman used to do on tour. Last time I had seen Yes was ten years ago when Jon was still in the band and missed completely the Benoit David tours (I had tickets for both tours and both times I could not go) but enjoyed very much Jon Davison performance. It seemed to see the current Yes with a 25-years old Jon Anderson from the time of the Fragile album :-) His singing was excellent indeed and without mistakes.

Two and half hours of great music and the show was over. I will be back to the US again!!!!

Enjoy the music

Notes:

This was my 37th Yes show and the first time the band has performed at the Orpheum (it's also the first time they've played downtown Los Angeles). The three album tour was a rather unique concept for the band and it was fantastic that this led to the opportunity for me to hear "A Venture" live for the first time. And considering this was only the 4th show of the tour, they all seemed to play rather well. I can only assume that the time spent on having proper rehearsals benefitted their performance greatly. The downsides to the show were: Howe seemed to get upset at the monitor engineer a couple of times--especially during the beginning of "SK" when Howe made hand motions indicating he couldn't hear and then walked off the stage for a brief moment (I'm only mentioning this in case you wonder why his playing is messed up at the beginning of that song); Geoff's playing on "CTTE" is odd, but considering his recent loss, I'm amazed he is playing as well as he is.

There is talking and some minor phasing during the early part of "CTTE" as people were trying to find their seats. It's at its worst about 9 minutes into that same song since it was like musical chairs in my row due to people sitting where they weren't supposed to be. There is more minor phasing and the sound of a plastic cup being kicked in "AYAI" from when the proper seat owners finally arrived. There's more minor phasing in the early part of "YIND" as people went by me in the row, as well as two further moments of phasing in "Roundabout." There's loud talking during "TOTC" as people
walked past me and a few shutter noises during "YIND." Fortunately, no one around me talked over the songs, but there were two drunken idiots in the section across from me who can be heard talking in the background through "WS." I'm thankful that I wasn't near them because one of them kept leaving his seat to walk to the front of the stage, much to the annoyance of the people who had to keep moving for him. And finally, the loudest applause came from the man behind me, who I swear was clapping into the back of my head (he had his feet at my armrest, so his arms probably extended a similar distance from his body).

Many thanks to interlude2 for letting me have the aisle seat so I could take pictures (and for putting up with the chatty fellow with the munchies). Hopefully you all like pics of Howe because he was the only one I could take unobstructed photos of (all the others will have heads in the shots). If you'd like to see more pics from the evening, please refer to my photo set at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kling_klang/

I amplified this but did nothing else to the recording, so be sure to turn it up. And if burning to cd, the suggested split is between "WS" and "Awaken."

Please support the band by buying their official releases and merch and seeing them live.

The 4th show of the tour,
Howe seemed to get upset at the monitor engineer a couple of times. During the beginning of Siberian Khatru he made hand motions indicating he couldn't hear and then walked off the stage for a brief moment. Consequently, his playing is inconsistent during that song. Geoff's playing on CTTE is odd, but considering his recent loss, it is amazing that he is playing at all. His
daughter died in an accident in February.

Ok first time seeing them With Jon Davidson on vocals, honestly I like the guy his stage persona was there and did a very standup job!
Great energy through out the night. Couple of hiccups

Chris during the begining of And You and I missed his bass cue... dont think any audience member but me caught it.. saw him right after stairing at his bass tech laughing then turned to Alan White shrugging his shoulders.

During I've seen all good people someone started to soon and Steve counted the rest of the group in 2 seconds later.

All in all a great Yes gig
Please enjoy!!
Mike

Notes:

I had been looking forward to the Hammond Indiana show for what seemed like ages. The interactive seating chart offered my choice of seats the day tickets went on sale months earlier, so I was able to locate myself in the sweet spot.

As I was attending this show solo, the four hour drive was boring but thankfully uneventfull. Checked into the hotel, triple checked my gear and headed out. The Venue is located in the Horseshoe Casino on the Lake Michigan shore, just south of the city of Chicago. My spot on the seventh floor of the casino's parking structure offered a dramatic view of the downtown skyline. Walking through the casino to get to "The Venue" I was alternately fascinated and disgusted. Making my way through the endless rows of slot machines, the patrons reminded me of the bar scene from Star Wars and the smell of cigarette smoke permeated everything. Hell, I've been known to partake of the occasional Marlborough Light and it even disgusted me! In stark contrast, the concert venue was everything the casino was not. Clean, fresh smelling, luxuriously appointed and intimate. Things were looking up. I was one of the first people let in, so killed some time wandering around checking out the sight lines from all locations. I could not find a bad seat in the house and the two giant big screens on either side of the stage were sure to enhance the experience.

The band walked on stage to the opening strains of Firebird Suite giving me goosebumps! The sound at the beginning of the opening song was a little "mushy" but was quickly rectified. The set list for tonight's Three Album Tour show was Close to the Edge, Going for the One, a twenty minute intermission, followed by The Yes Album and Roundabout for the encore.

Steve Howe was the undisputed star of the evening. Chris Squire's thundering bass and Alan White's steady drumming kept the rhythm's moving at a nice pace. Geoff Downes did an admirable job on the keys. Given his recent personal tragedy, it's amazing he is even touring and Jon Davison was incredible. Easily hitting the highest of notes, he made the lyrics his. He seems to be more at home with the band and it showed in his interaction with the audience. High fiving people in the front row and calling out an enormous dancing sasquatch in the VIP section, he brought a lot of energy to the performance.

Perhaps bolstered by the promise of receiving a copy of the show, the folks around me were relatively respectfull and had little negative impact on the recording.

Remastering notes:

Both raw recordings from ravingandrooling were already spectacular. My remastering was therefore limited to very careful EQ in order to bring more presence, and levels adjustment. I remastered the two sources separately. The main characteristics of Source 1 (DPA4061) were a very warm sound, good definition in the bass notes from Chris, and thundering bass drum kicks from Alan. The high frequencies were also very detailed in this first source. For Source 2 (CA14c), the strength was more in the guitars, keyboards and vocals. Therefore the 2 recordings were perfectly complementary. As a result, the matrix of these 2 sources sounds better than each separate source. Enjoy!

Yes was coming to Austin to play 2 of my favorite albums and Going for the One. I called A high school buddy and Yes fan to see if he wanted to come along. Of course the answer was YES.

We both brought a recorder to get 2 shots at a good recording. Seated in the 6th row to the left of center the view was great as was the sound. The guy next to me was a nice guy but he felt a need to yell YEAH every so often. Over all the crowd was quite while the band played.
I bought VIP seats for $125. I felt I already got my money's worth after Close To The Edge and there was still 2 albums to go! It was great to hear the albums in their entirety just like I heard every day in the summer of 1973 and many, many days afterwards.
There has been discussion about Jon D replacing Jon A. I think Jon D did an outstanding job. Probably better than the current Jon A could do.

Contrast clause- this recording differs from source 1 because it was recorded a couple feet to the left of source 1. It was also recorded at a higher recording level.

Started off as a good day when the UPS guy delivered my new microphones just in time to get everything ready to go to the show.
Was a little worried as I did not have a lot of time to test out the mics before I had to leave for the show. The show was not sold out and I had
4 empty seats to my left so I eventually moved to those seats and was able to comfortably monitor the levels and get them adjusted. I think the
recording came out really good. I also got some Hyper Card elements too. I will try them sometime soon but for now I am happy with the mics.

The show itself was great. Steve Howe was the most impressive of the group, he never fails to impress me. I thought Jon Davison did an
admirable job as well. When I first heard about this tour I thought .... "Why Going For The One?" but I have to say I have a much deeper apreciation
for that album now. I always liked Wonderous Stories, but had not paid real close attention to the rest of the album. My mistake... it is realy much better
than I remembered it to be. There was an intermission between Close to the Edge and Going for the One. I cut out that intermission and spliced the
very begining of the Going For The One set to the end of Siberian Khatru. You can hear the cut for that split second as they don't match perfectly but
it is audience noise so you have all the music intact.

As these are new mics I welcome any comments on the sound quality.

As always... Enjoy!

I was not going to go to this show because I knew I would only get 2 albums out of the three. But a buddy of mine had comped tickets so I couldn't pass up a freebie. This was recorded from the floor about 25 feet from the stage in the center. Because this was a casino the setlist was abbreviated, but it was a really good show. Tempos, for the most part, were back to normal. Like previous complaints about the last couple tours Geoff Downes keys were inaudible at times although the recording seems to do a better job than the ears. Steve Howe was the best of the night. At one point during Perpetual Change Steve, Chris and Alan were not together timing-wise, but after about 30 seconds they got it together. Jon Davison did not disappoint.

The vocals are buried a little as I was a little too close for an

recording with a very sweet stage mix over all!

Comments: Here's the Connecticut stop of the "Three Album" tour. Except they only did two albums here because of Foxwoods regulations. It was a pretty strong performance. The tempos were much better than previous tours. I don't know why the beginning of "I've Seen All Good People" has sounded so out of tune this tour. I've noticed this on other recordings as well. Other than that, everything was played well and with lots of energy.

The recording came out very nice. There are some background conversations that are slightly audible in places. There was waitress service, so you can hear some of that at one point. There was two empty seats to my right for most of the show, but during "Starship Trooper" an overly energetic "woo-er" decided to move in. He was crazy. At one point he was jumping up and down so much that the floor was shaking. Fortunately, he calmed down for the most part after that song. Luckily, I don't believe it ruined the recording. There is a section of "Perpetual Change" that sounds like static, but it's actually the confetti bomb. I was so close to the stage I was right in the middle of it, so you can hear that too. It's still a very nice recording from a memorable evening!

Artwork is included in the torrent. The photos are from the actual show.

Hello Everyone:

This performance was stellar from start to finish albeit abbreviated due to casino agreement. I was going to rant about it but why bother, perhaps someone can give me a logical reason for the 90 minute rule (getting patrons to the gaming floor is not a good answer). Anyway, the band was in fine form and animated throughout the whole set. Steve seemed to be enjoying himself immensely and the rest of the band were loose and in the zone. I really wanted to hear GFTO, on my top ten list of albums that I would want if stranded on a desert island. Thanks to the other Dimers for their great efforts in documenting this tour so at least I have the other full length shows to listen to. Perhaps we'll get a Tormato/Tales tour next year!

As for the recording, excellent position with minimal crowd distraction. Go ahead and crank it up, nice stereo separation and channel definition.

Check back often here in the comments section for some awesome pictures by groovunit.

Enjoy!

This is one great YES concert
the Beacon, NYC
April 9th, 2013.

One of the best I've ever heard from them. This was recorded from the 5th row, 1st balcony, center section. It's just above the loge seating below. There are huge speakers hanging from the ceiling at the Beacon so the sound levels and mix are good from this position. Downe's keyboards are a little low in volume at points but Steve's guitar just seemed to flow from the stage!

I used a Zoom H2Next with low-cut filter, limiter (concert), auto-gain (concert) which seemed to work out well. There is no swooshing sound like previous auto-gain circuits might have created.

There was about a twenty minute intermission following "Perpetual Change" and the performance of "Going for the One." Enjoy!

(This is my first shared torrent file EVER, so feel free to give me any suggestions. The original 96/24 file sounds rich and I'm hoping not too much is lost in the downsampling process.)

Good+ sound, no audio processing.

This is Yes playing complete versions of three of their classic albums: Close to the edge, Going for the One, and The Yes album.
Overall, a very enjoyable show. There were some problems with the sound, and also a bat flying over the band members' heads for most of the duration of the show, both of which Steve Howe refers to on track 17.

NOTES:

What a weekend. I flew to Kansas City to see the final RUSH gig of 2013 and chickened out and did
not take my gear in to that show. I believe they had wands or walkthrus and wasn't feeling it. I had
an avg seat anyway, straight back on Al's side but in the lower level so even though it did sound pretty good there, that tape wasn't gonna be that great...and I figured why not just rock out instead of being the human microphone that night...however, I needed my gear since I coming back to see Yes
in the Pittsburgh area the next night, and I was definately rolling for this one.

Chris, RIP, sounded great this night. The bass is pretty solid here and very well represented. I was
just left of the PA and the show is not quite as upfront as usual, but still pretty good overall.
Seeing a set like this with Jon Anderson and Wakeman would have been spectacular but this is about the next best thing. This was the last Yes show I saw of Chris and this band (of any lineup as a matter of fact) and its sad to think I'll never hear that powerful and funky bass again. Its amazing how TONE is so integral to the player, same notes, diff sounds...The entire band was really playing great as a group this tour and I'm glad I got to see them. Steve was incredible as usual, great to hear "Clap" again. Downes is ok on keyboards, nothing like Rick and "Awaken" will never be as good but it wasn't too shabby this night. The intro to it was botched a little, but again, he's no Rick.

These are probably my favorite Yes albums (for most I'm sure), along with Fragile, which I missed the next year but I did see a good portion of that record played live since I saw them play Southside and We Have Heaven in 2002 and 2004 with Jon Anderson, the last greatest version of the Yes lineups. I'm very much looking forward to the ARW (Anderson Rabin Wakeman) show in Pgh in October.

This master tape is uncirculated and my last Yes show not in the wild. Initially, I didn't think this
show sounded that great but its better than I thought, not perfect but good enough to enjoy by the masses I hope, so it's time to get it out there...

Dedicated to the master on bass, Mr. Christopher Russell Edward Squire, RIP. Yes will never be the same, nor will any live version of "Heart of the Sunrise" or "Perpetual Change". Gonna miss that harmonica in "And You And I" too...that final bass note in Roundabout is so classic Chris Squire, I'm glad I captured it!!

There are some minor EQ adjustments (bass bump and slight cut to mids). I balanced the channels and
bumped the levels as well. This one sounds pretty good on headphones.

There are no fades in the middle tracks. Start with Awaken on disc 2 if burning.

Repost if you like, just keep info and file set intact, please.

I was less than impressed with the sound mix on this evening, so didn't immediately release this recording. Stumbled across the master last night and after a quick listen and some turd polishing, realized it wasn't as bad as I originally thought. vocals are a little distant and you've got to listen to me asking (politely) the chatty couple in front of me to stop trying to talk over the music during CTTE. Certainly not my best capture, but I beleive it compares quite favorably to the two recordings of this show that are in circulation.

Yes "Three Album Tour"
Cain Park
Cleveland Heights, Ohio, USA
7 August 2013

recorded & mastered by 'Wedge-Guilala'

possible title-"Olivia's 1st Yes Show" (my 12-year-old Niece's 2nd-ever concert)
aka- "Three Generations of Yes Fans, Together" (my dad, my sister, my niece, and me were all their, seated together & Rocking Out!!)

ok, heres my capture of Yes on this night. recorded on my phone, rather than my trusty cassette recorder.
tested out my old cassette deck last night, and it would do Anything but record sound. ARGHHH!!!
i've never recorded anything on my phone before, so i was nervous, to say the least.
the rustling you hear, every now and then, is me checking my phone to make sure it was still recording, and moving the unit around on top of the blanket i was seated on, to make sure the mic was pointed directly towards the stage. but that's only during breaks between songs.
there we're some annoying 'talkers' seated around me, who were more interested in
checking their phones to update the status of the local baseball team's game going on this night, and some 'personal' issues that they talked loud enough for everyone to hear. and now its all recorded, for the world to eventually hear. hope you both are happy for annoying me during the show!!!
and they can be heard pretty well during the quieter parts; especially during "And You And I" and the "Going For The One" portion of the show. why anyone would pay $40+ for a ticket, and then pretty much ignore the band playing, and annoy those who are/were trying to enjoy the show...a bummer...
and all the subtle "PFFT-Clicks!!" you hear at times, are people seated around me opening their canned beers. those are tough to hear, though. the only time that really happens was when a lady standing directly behind me fell down on the plastic tarp she was standing on; a bit too drunk to stay standing up i guess, and fell towards me,
kicking the blanket my phone was propped-up on. i just smiled at her. she was just Digging the show!!
Yeah, there was a REALLY Strong Party going on in the audience!!!

although the sound level is quite a bit low, this really sounds as fantastic as it did at the venue; once the sound crew turned the levels up after "Close To The Edge". maybe The TooleMan or Relayerman can provide some sort of 'volume boost' to this one and EQ the talker's down a bit, assuming they ever get their hands on it.
i do not have the ability to torrent, and this recording is only being sent to/shared with with 2 specific Yes traders i have been in contact with over the past few years. how it distributes further, or gets circulated after that, is entirely up to them (Chris Doughty & Remy Menting).

if torrenting, please give credit to me, Wedge-Guilala, as the recording source, and please keep the .ffp file intact for the next recipient.

SHARE & SHARE , ALIKE!!! :)

and, i really lucked-out getting this recording. a lot of people sitting close to me were attempting to capture video bits 'n' pieces of the show on their cell-phones, only to have venue security swoop in, and shut them down; almost immediately. i guess they didnt notice my phone, propped-up on a wadded-up blanket, strategically aimed directly towards the stage :)

But here it is, Yes Live, to a VERY enthusiastic 'sold-out' audience; probably 2000~2300 in attendance. which is saying quite a bit. last time Yes played in Cleveland was over 2 years ago at House Of Blues. and that place has a capacity of around 800. and it was, maybe, half-full on that particular night. Maybe.

i'm going to make 2 masters of this show. one will be a 'raw feed' directly to my Pioneer PDR-509 component CD-R deck with the volume as far high as it will let me go.
the other will be going the same route to my Harmon/Kardon DC-520 cassette deck onto fresh,brand-new, pre-'stretched' Maxell XLII-110 cassettes (that i had hoped to capture the show with, originally), with Dolby B used on the recording. then i will attempt to
boost the sound a bit during playback, with the dolby turned off, and record it to the same stereo component CD-R recorder. this way, i can increase the sound without, noticably, adding much noise 'bottom'; outside of a very small bit of added Analog Warmth and compression.

THIS IS THE RAW MASTER!!! all track-ID's done on the 'fly' while recording from my phone.

Yes on this night were-

by the time i 'break it up' into individual discs with minor fades, it may be a few seconds longer.

my personal review of the show (just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less)-

Yes, as they now are, were Spectacular!!! that being said, i think they played about 90% perfect. there are some really rough parts in specific portions of "Close To The Edge", "Siberian Khatru", "Awaken", and "Perpetual Change" where the playing was weak & sloppy during some solo's/insturmental breaks, but...whatever. these guys are in their 60's, and even when they were young & HOT, that shit was hard to play. and being older & tired after damn-near 100 shows on this tour... who could blame them. hell, they wrote the songs, and they can do whatever they want with them at this point, and its still 'authentic' . my only real complaint was the way Steve played his guitar breaks in "Roundabout"...really hurried & frantic; not in a good way, though. he must have really wanted to get out of there, or had a hot-date waiting for him back-stage, or something. that was really noticable, and really detracted during Roundabout.

but, all in all, it was a Great set, and the entire audience had a great time...and so did I!!!

and i gotta trash the OG file on my phone after i put this to CD-Argh & cassette.
its been a week after the show, and my phone is really effin' up from this recording
taking up the memory on it. but my transfer is complete, with no noise added, and the fade-ins are repeating a few previous seconds, while changing discs during copying,
so nothing from this night is lost. it's all there!!!

Tapers notes:
The band was electric from the first notes of CTTE and the sound quality was great. Crystal clear highs with bass that you could feel. The mix seemed very well balanced, which has not always been the case on this tour. I ran two separate recording rigs but chose to share the DPA 4061 version as these mics really shine in the right outdoor setting. From my perspective this is the best capture I have gotten from the four shows I attended on this tour. Enjoy!

Mastering notes:
Lowest frequencies were attenuated in order to avoid too much "booms" when Alan kicks his bass drum. Some other frequencies were slightly increased to be able to clearly hear Chris notes. For the high frequencies, some EQ was performed as well, because the cymbals on the rough recording had too much "ringing" sound.
Levels adjustment was a big part of the remastering process, applauses and crowd noises being at higher volume than the music sometimes. Between songs, it was easy to correct. However, it was much more challenging to attenuate (manually) the audience clapping during songs.
I'm quite happy with the results, this recording can now be enjoyed LOUD, DEEP and CLEAR!

Notes: Recorded from balcony right, row U. This was the final show of the U.S. tour.
There was surprisingly little chatter around me despite the fact that it was the
latest-arriving crowd I think I've ever seen. In fact, I think at this very moment there
are still people showing up and asking an usher to help find their seat in the dark.
The performance was top-notch as one would expect from these guys, and they seem
to genuinely be enjoying it. Catch them on tour in Europe next year if you can. Enjoy!

15 Roundabout

I listened to Yes a lot growing up so it was cool to hear these albums live. They did Close To The Edge and Going For the One. Then there was an intermission, and when they came back they played The Yes Album plus an encore. I got into it but it does almost have the feel of a tribute band. The night before, ZZ Top played the same arena, they had a 'full concert' setup (even though the floor was very undersold). This night for Yes it was a 'half concert' and again it was pretty undersold. This show had very little promotion or advertising at all. At least with a lot of empty seats there's less crowd noise on the recording.

I also got the whole show on video which turned out pretty good. Being a 'half concert' there wasn't a lot of distance between me and the stage.

The band appeared very relaxed and happy. The sound from the balcony was wonderful; Steve Howe's guitar very prominent, but the keyboards were louder than my previous experiences hearing this lineup. The biggest problem with the sound was lack of bass. You'll have to EQ the heck out of it if you want to hear Chris Squires' bass like other Yes concerts. The loud hissing you'll hear towards the end of Perpetual Change is the confetti cannons going off, apparently my mics were pointed almost straight at one of them. There was one A**hole whistler who managed to make his presence known. There is also some clipping, especially during the 2nd set. It hasn't kept me from listening to it again and again, but then I'm prejudiced.

Day 2 continued:

Renaissance, Three Friends, and Yes in the same day? To add to the surreal picture, we had dinner at a table next to the members of PFM with "Supper's Ready" as background music in the dining room. "Is this real life? Is this going to be forever?"

Even though I had seen them less than a year ago and was expecting a good show, I wasn't sure if Yes would measure up to some of the amazing performances we had already witnessed on the ship. Our hosts came through with what I thought was an excellent performance. There even appeared to be some magic on stage, or was it just me on my own magical mystery tour? Most people I spoke with later that week agreed that Yes' first performance was much better than their second. I was pleased to discover that the sound from my assigned seat was far superior to that of my previous experiences in the Pantheon Theater. (At times I think it might be a little "crispy" but I prefer that to a little "muddy.") Day 2 ended with a very happy Lostbrook wandering the decks of the ship listening to the replay of the day's adventures.

I enjoyed Yes on Day 2 and wanted to see them again, so upon the conclusion of my frustrating Tangerine Dream experience, I made my way over to the Pantheon Theater and got a good spot on the standby line. I wasn't happy with the side balcony position I was offered but it was almost show time and I didn't see any choice at the moment - in fact I ended up missing a few seconds of Firebird Suite while setting up my equipment. The opening minutes of America didn't sound bad but when the vocals began, I knew immediately I was going to have to move. I waited until the song ended then found a secluded standing position in the left-center balcony where the sound was significantly better due to alignment with the stage-right stack. It was such a dramatic improvement that I decided to break another "taper rule" and went back to the side balcony after Tempus Fugit to bring a friend to the new location. You'll hear a little rustling and some whispers before things settle down nicely for Close to the Edge. The rest of the recording is without incident other than some late arrivals slamming the rear theater doors on their way in, the thought never entering their minds to close the door gently when entering a show in progress. One group barged through the doors and decided to have a nice chat during a portion of All Good People. In the end I'm glad I made the move but all of this threw me a little off balance and I wasn't able to relax and experience the show as I had the previous day. I was also still upset about Tangerine Dream and now I had another flawed recording on my hands. Furthermore, it seemed to me that Yes was slightly off balance as well and that the magic of the first performance was missing, though I wasn't sure if it was them or me. (The vast majority of people I spoke with afterwards agreed that Yes' second performance was underwhelming and didn't approach that of their first.) Either way, Day 3 was in the books with Sound Of Contact, Soft Machine Legacy, UK, Tangerine Dream, and Yes. Not a bad day's "work" I would say.

YES @ The SECC, Clyde Auditorium (The Armadillo) Glasgow ,SCOTLAND Fri 2nd May at 7:00pm

Front stalls row J TO LEFT HAND SIDE OF STAGE (INFRONT OF STEVE HOWE) great stage view and sound a quietish Glasgow audience who gave the respect to the music until each section was complete. This seemed to confuse steve howe .you will here him trying to enthuse people.
FANTASTIC SET and the band looked relaxed and happy to be playing. inc the new singer the sets are slice only into complete sections played not into individual pieces.

no eq no other tampering im very happy with this recording.

Notes

Recorded from the balcony above the right-hand side of the stage (seat C13).
Based on the Rick gig the previous week (very quiet), I'd set gain to medium, but it oversaturated. iZotope fixed it nicely.

Yes - The Snow Goose
Gran Teatro Geox
Padua, Italy
17 May 2014

Three Album Tour performance.
The Geox Theatre in Padua is renowned for its good sound quality, especially if you are in the first sector/first rows.
The performance was quite good, apart from the slowed version of some songs. The new singer sang fairly well, though his voice was slurred and passed by the sounds of the guitars and of the bass. Effect probably wanted just to to hide some errors both of the singer, and keyboardist...
Anyway it was great to see the YEs again, together with my great friend mr_plod.

1st golden rule on a prog concert: there are always couples where the guy has to explain something to the girl every ~2 minutes (e.g. what a pedal steel guitar is, on which records the keyboard player was on,...).

2nd golden rule: one of those couples is located right before me or by my side (or both).

But luckily Yes played loud so it didn't affect the recording too much. The sound is not overwhelming but good.

The tempos could be faster, of course, but they've done slower before (or have I got used to it?). Songs like "Parallels" and "Perpetual Change" suffer most from lush playing - during the latter Alan White obviously fell asleep (3:29). Another laugh is Jon Davison's first vocal cue ("close to the edge" @ 1:42): dedicated to Benoit David!

After all they played rather good if you don't compare it to "Total Mass Retain" (the bonus 7" version from the CTTE cd).

I released a mastered version of my tape on dime a while ago but was never really satisfied with the result. After biddie sent me his recording I started a new effort but the first results were disappointing either. My recording suffered from general lousyness and too much stage distance, in biddie's version (sounding distant as well) the vocals had some annoying mid frequencies. Removing these left a brittle, unpleasant sound. So I combined the two sources and... wow. Now you have strong basses and shiny vocals. Additionally I used a 'reverb remover' which surprisingly did a very good job in obtaining a more direct sound. The new master still has some flaws but it's a big improvement to my first version and despite being heavily processed it still sounds natural.

The show was recorded by my sister, who got the basic training on using MD an hour before the show. Unofrtunately, she forgot to switch the hold button and stopped the recording accidentally on Going For The One. Also, there are some mic clicks on the last set and encore.
